Clubs & Societies Highlight: PhilSoc

Co-curricular activities welcome likeminded students and staff to nurture passions and indulge interests, forging friendships which span across classes and year groups. Our current provision is extensive, numbering at over one hundred and fifty options, with more growing each year. Each week, we seek to celebrate one of the many clubs and societies that form part of the rich fabric of ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú’.

The Religion and Philosophy Department has been delighted to see Philosophy Society (otherwise known as ‘PhilSoc’) develop into a valuable space for intellectual engagement at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú’. Every Thursday during 'The Hour,' the primarily student-led discussions in RP18 reflect the thoughtful and dedicated approach that our students bring both to the club and the wider school. As a department, we are proud of the students who make PhilSoc what it is. Led by Upper Sixth students (most of whom are preparing to study Philosophy at top universities including Oxford and Cambridge), the society benefits from their passion for philosophy, fostering a stimulating environment for all participants, regardless of their background.*

Each week, a new topic is introduced, sparking thoughtful debate across the room. From classic philosophical questions about free will to the contemporary ethics of artificial intelligence, no subject is too complex for this group – testament, perhaps, to the vibrant culture of enquiry at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú’. What makes the society particularly inviting is the informal yet intellectually rigorous atmosphere, where all students feel encouraged to contribute and engage.

Dr Birtles has observed clear parallels between the discussions at PhilSoc and those found in post-graduate-level seminars. Reflecting on his own experiences, he noted that PhilSoc offers an environment where ideas are critically examined and refined in much the same way as in higher education. It is deeply rewarding to see students engage with challenging concepts, offering thoughtful analysis and well-reasoned arguments, and we are perpetually impressed by the students’ ability to navigate complex topics with such enthusiasm and clarity.

PhilSoc isn’t just a club; it’s a community of thinkers. For some of our students, it’s the highlight of their week, offering a chance to step away from the pressures of schoolwork and delve into some of life’s most challenging questions. It is an important reminder that the value of education extends far beyond grades and exams – a truly meaningful education is about intellectual curiosity, dialogue, and growth. We look forward to seeing how their philosophical journeys continue to unfold.

* While PhilSoc is primarily aimed towards Middle and Upper School students, regardless of their GCSE and A Level options, ‘The Philosophers’ World’ (Tuesdays also during the Hour) offers a similar opportunity for exploration in the Lower School, and also serves as preparation for full engagement with PhilSoc once students graduate to Middle and Upper School!
